“To know where we are going, we must understand where we have been.”
— Sephardic proverb

Sefarad refers to the vibrant Jewish civilization that flourished for centuries in the Iberian Peninsula and, following the expulsions of the late 15th century, spread across the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. Sephardic Jews carried with them a rich cultural and intellectual tradition—shaping Jewish law, philosophy, poetry, music, commerce, and intercultural exchange.

Rooted in adaptability and creativity, Sephardic communities served as bridges between cultures, preserving Jewish continuity while engaging deeply with the societies around them. Their legacy lives on in liturgy, language, cuisine, music, and communal life, continuing to inspire Jewish identity today.

One of the most profound dimensions of this legacy is the Converso phenomenon. While the global Jewish population today numbers approximately 14 million, scholars estimate that tens of millions of people worldwide may be descendants of Jews forced to convert during the medieval period. In response, the Jewish Heritage Alliance and Skylake Synagogue are collaborating on a groundbreaking initiative to help identify and engage these descendants—providing education, cultural context, and pathways to reconnect with their Jewish roots.
